EpiCenter alert: Increase in Emergency Department Visits for Suspected Drug Overdose in Cuyahoga County
March 19, 2024 – Based on EpiCenter emergency department (ED) visit data, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health has seen an increase in the number of patients presenting to EDs for suspected drug overdose. Multiple alerts occurred from March 17th 4am through March 19th 2am, totaling to 41 patients seen in our EDs for drug-related injuries, compared to an average of approximately 10 daily.
Data analyses showed Black/African Americans represented nearly 50% of cases; approximately 20% of cases were under age 18, and reported cannabis use (including edibles) involvement was observed for this population; for adults specified drugs included primarily opioids and stimulants.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has seen an increase in overdose deaths (8 suspected) during this period as well.
